Zechariah 4:1–14 — The Lampstand and Olive Trees
Zechariah 4:1–14 — Vision 5
The Lampstand and Olive Trees
Zechariah’s fifth vision depicts a golden lampstand flanked by two olive trees. This symbolic imagery represents the people of God and the supply of the Holy Spirit. The light in the lampstand symbolized God’s presence in the Temple. The house of the Lord, whether the Tabernacle or Solomon's Temple, always had a lampstand providing light within it. The Tabernacle contained a single golden lampstand lighting the Holy Place (Exodus 25:31–40); Solomon's Temple had ten lampstands made of pure gold, five on each side of the front of the inner sanctuary (1 Kings 7:49). The lampstands in the vision represented God's people. The two olive trees supplying oil to the lampstand signified God's continuous provision, ensuring the light never goes out of the lamps. The light produced by the lampstand represented God’s glory and His presence among His people.
The Purpose of the Vision
The primary purpose of this vision was to assure Judah of the Lord's continued enablement. It a message to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, and the people that the challenging task of rebuilding the Temple will be accomplished not by human might or power, but by the Spirit of God. This reassurance was expressed in the famous declaration,
“‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6).
Application
Zechariah’s fifth vision calls us to recognize our need to depend on the Holy Spirit's guidance and support in all we do. Just as the olive trees provided oil to the lampstand, we too can have non-ending help and power from the Holy Spirit. This vision encourages us to depend on the Holy Spirit for strength and direction, rather than on our own abilities. We need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to accomplish what the Lord's call us to do here on earth.
Are you seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance in your life? Or do you trust in yourself?
Are you trusting the Lord's ever-present help in times of need?
