Ephesians 5:15–21 — Walk in Wisdom
Ephesians 5:15–21 — Walk in Wisdom
Once again, the Apostle Paul uses the exhortation "walk", this time to tell the Ephesians to walk circumspectly. The adverb "circumspectly" modifies the verb "walk" to mean that the Ephesians should not be reckless, carefully paying attention to how they live their life. In other words, he is asking them to be wise. This contrasts sharply with the state of believers who are sleeping and need to “arise” (Ephesians 5:14).
The wisdom by which the Ephesians ought to live is different from worldly wisdom. Rather, this is a gift from God that helps believers discern His will and live accordingly. The reason believers ought to walk carefully is that the days are evil. We presently live in an age characterized by an abundance of evil. The present evil era will continue until Christ comes and puts an end to the widespread rebellion against God's rule and authority. If the evil days are the "why", then "by redeeming the time" is the "how". Believers would be wise to make use of every opportunity to join God on His mission. That is God's will for our lives. We know His will when we hear from Him through His Scripture and then heed His words.
The apostle Paul then juxtaposes being drunk—which is foolishness because it a waste of time, resources, and lives—with being filled with the Holy Spirit—who help us to know God's will. Being filled with the Spirit happens when we speak to one another in hymns and spiritual songs, giving thanks to God, and submitting to one another.
Are you seeking God's will for your life?
Are you redeeming the time?
Or are you wasting your life seeking pleasure?
