Ruth 2:1–7 — The Hope of Grace

Ruth 1 closes under the shadow of ruin: Naomi has lost her husband and sons, returned to Bethlehem bitter, and described herself as empty. But Ruth 2 opens with a dramatic change in direction. Chapter 1 was ruin; chapter 2 begins with provision. Chapter 1 was bitterness; chapter 2 begins with hope. Chapter 1 showed Ruth choosing to follow God; chapter 2 shows Ruth serving. Ruth does not know what God is about to do, but she does not remain passive. She humbly asks permission to go glean, hoping to “find favor” in someone’s sight. She is not demanding anything; she is simply taking the next faithful step. And before Ruth even steps into the field, God's grace was already preparing a way to provide for her, not only physically but spiritually.

Then comes one of the beautiful statements of God’s quiet work in the book: Ruth “happened” to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz. To Ruth it looked like chance; to God it was grace working through providence. That is often how God works in our lives—not always through dramatic miracles, but through ordinary days, ordinary decisions, and circumstances we could never have arranged ourselves. So take the next faithful step. Do not mistake ordinary circumstances for meaningless ones. God may already be arranging what you cannot yet see. Hope obeys, hope acts, hope serves, because it trusts that God is still at work.
